A bottle was found in the wall of a house in my town of Two Harbors, Minnesota, which dates back to when the town was first started. The label is still on it, but we don't know what the names refer to, whether they're local, or from somewhere else. The label says:

George Glendenning
Calumet Club
1880
Rye Whiskey
Two Harbors, Minnesota

Is Calumet Club the brand of whiskey from back then? Or could it have been bottled for a private club here at that time? "Here" was pretty raw in those years; in fact, the first townsite was called "Whiskey Row." Thanks for any ideas!

We need a picture Monica! If it has the whole label, and it's in good shape, it's worth something for sure...but no one can say much (I'm guessing) without a pic..My guess without a pic is it's a good one...

Well, believe it or not, it's not the value I'm interested in. It's the history. But I'll see about getting a photo. I'm new here. I hope I can figure out how to upload. ;-)

OK, here's a picture of the bottle I mentioned above. Does anyone know the significance of the names on it?

Monica,

The bottle itself looks to date to the late 1800's up until the turn of the century. The type of bottle is called a coffin flask and is a very common whiskey container from that time. While it is dated 1880,that is probably when the brand was established but I would guess it was bottled long after. It would have been common in a small town to have label only bottles as they would not have spent the money to emboss their bottles.I would try to look in early business directories and census reports from your town to find the man's name.Would concentrate in the 1890-1910 time frame.Hope this helps,Doug

Cool! Man I wish I could find that stuff! I went to a house fresh knocked down today and didn't spy anything in the rubble.
