We were digging a little woodliner and it was kind of last ditch. We started it a few digs back and it was packed with crushed broken brick and clay so we gave up on it. Yesterday we didn't have much else to dig so we went back to it. The whole time we dug we were going back and forth, you want to fill it in? you want to fill it in? one more time we probably would have. It was finally exposed laying a foot off the bottom right below many bricks. We thought it was an english ammonia/poison. John kept saying is there anything else it could be? I was thinking it could be a Budwell's but whats the chance of that? I've dug many broken and was familiar with the bottle. What a nice surprise when it came out, it was a Budwells-Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil No.2- With Guaiacol and Creosote Carbonate- Budwell Pharmacal Co. Lynchburg, VA. Amazing it survived! The hole was filled in around 1900, there was a corner pharmacy bottle and a few unems.

I hate to think about all the holes that don't get finished...

LOL...We were seconds away from filling it in. In fact all I had to do was to get out of the hole and it would have been filled in. Let this be a lesson to everyone, Be carefull when to decide to give up on a hole. By the looks of it, there was little reason to dig this thing. But perserverence payed off. Like you say phil, "gotta dig it to find out"

If I remember correctly isn't there one with a whale-like creature embossed on it? I 've dug ambers and would like to hear about other variants.

That's a great bottle Phil. Love the cobalt blue. Here's a piece of an amber Budwell that I found recently. Eddie, have you ever seen a Budwell from Roanoke before? I have a feeling that they might be a tad more rare than the Lynchburg bottles. I keep hoping that a whole one will show up.
