Hey All,

I know a lot of you out there find different types of clay pipes.
My question is I have one of those face pipes with 13 stars and "United States of America" around the lip of it.........but it is so much smaller than the pipes that I normally find

Are most of the face pipes that much smaller than the standard T & D ones?

You can see what I'm talking about in the following photos

Thanks,
Doug

I don't know much about clay pipes either, but if anyone has info on the "standard" pipes Dabeel mentioned (like when they were produced), I'd love to find out more about them.

Generally, the smaller the bowl the older the pipe. That doesn't count for the rich folk because they could afford more tobacco than the poor. It became cheaper in the last half of the 1800s.

Thanks for the help all.

Someone else mentioned that about the smaller the bowl the older the age.

That theory works for the ones I found, as the face pipe was found with sodas dating from late 1850's to 1860's

The larger ones were found in later era holes 1870's to 1880's

Thanks,
Doug

That is a general guideline for early kaolin pipes. I'm not sure it can be applied to 19th century pipes. i think Mike Russell had a big collection of pipes and may be able to add some info if he is around.
