I found this ball mason while wading today. I was actually there to fish more than wade, but I look around still. I found this jar just upstream from the bridge I entered from. I have found Ball jars and lids, but never a jar w/ lid and some wire bail attached. The area where I found it was muddy/sandy. I think there must be a dump very close to where the jar was. If you go about 1/8 mile upstream it becomes very rocky. I doubt the jar would have survived a tumble through the rocks. I took a before/after pic, cleaned up pretty nice w/ soap, water, and a scotch brite. Reads on the side pat'd July 14 1908.

That's quite a cleaning job! I don't see the bail wire in the "after" shot... I hope it survived.

BTW (I'm sure you already know this, but in case a newbie is reading) everyone should use the blue "non-scratch" Scotch-Brite pads on old glass. The ordinary green ones can leave scratches and hazy spots.

YIKES, I have been using the green ones. I will get blue ones while at the store today. After I go to the store I might go to the Auglaize river. We have had some fall like temps for a few morns here in Ohio. Some of the smaller streams like the Auglaize and Greenville creek have really cleared up. I was in the Greenville the other day, could see bottom clearly while in waist deep water. My area has not had any measurable rain in a month. The farmers were fortunate that they had a great early growing season. We had corn at 6 ft tall by the 4rth of July. Then we had good rains to fill out the ears and soybeans so this dry weather has not harmed the harvest. We have had farmers taking off beans and chopping corn since Sunday, earliest I can recall. With this weather cooling it will soon be time for smallmouth bass and northern pike to fatten up. I look so forward to this time of year, that and spring mushrooms[:D]. Ok enough about me, how was your day, have a great one everyone, sorry about the non bottle related rant.
