I was always under the impression that crown tops only took bottle caps, is this early crown with lightning stopper possibly correct, did they ever use these types of stoppers on these crown tops. The pic looks like it is correct and the wire looks old and rusted but I don't want to make a mistake, I have labels to apply to slicks for diplay in my Paterson collection but I really want to know the truth behind these before I buy the group of bottles.
Thanx,
Jim

My understanding is that there was a transition period during the time the crown tops first came out to the time when all the bottlers used up their stock of bail or lightning type stoppers. I've dug some crown tops with lightning stoppers on them, but I think they were tooled crowns, not abm.

(in my own humble opinion)
The bottle was designed to use a crown type stopper. However, from time to time they do turn up with a lightning stopper like this that was originally used. Having said that, some people will put the stopper on a crown bottle nowadays and then call it an anomaly and raise the asking price. Yours looks like it was used a long time ago based upon the rusty and worn ring where the bail attaches around the neck.

The way I see it, the lightning stopper was still a great new thing when the crown cap came out in "92.. and there was the convenience for the consumer that the bottle could be easily re-sealed at any time.. the cap, however, popped off, and that was that. I'm guessing a lot of crown tops were soon converted back to stopper bottles by the bottling companies, especially before 1900.. eventually these companies ended up with economical capping mechanisms and the stoppers faded out...
