Digging Civil War "hut" sites....

Here's one of my better bottles from a Civil War soldiers winter hut. We locate these huts with metal detectors picking up iron junk in the bottom of some. We also use probes to feel for the fire places or the floors of these long ago covered up winter abodes of Civil War soldiers. Once you find a couple it's relatively easy to "line" them up and work down the row.

It's a blast to dig glass from these huts and you can sometimes ID the exact unit that stayed there and the exact time frame they were left. We find not only glass but other stuff like belt buckles, buttons and even a complete rifle. My favorite find though are inkwells. I can just picture a lonely soldier hunkered over a table writing home. It's moving to open up these little time capsules.

very cool!

I've found a ton of bullets, buttons and etc. at a civil war site, but a bottle has eluded me
