I need some help finding out what caused this interesting mark on the base of this snuff bottle. I hope Red will see this and help shed some light on this. I believe this has been discussed on here before but I can not find the post. Thanks for any ideas you guys could give me on this little mystery.

Just theorizing, I'm not an expert. I'm thinking it's a depression, yes. If so maybe something like old glass was stuck in the mold or maybe they worked it later on a table or on the floor with something there. Either of which could have been done before the punty was attached.
If it's raised, I need a new theory.[:)]

Thanks Eric, it is a depression in the bottle and excess glass in the bottom of the mold sounds like a pretty good guess to me.

Glass sticks to itself, so not glass. Something else, maybe wood, could have ended up in the mold.

Well thanks for the request atticfinds - and thinking of me. In that location it has to be tramp glass or from some glass that stuck to something. Does it go up the side any? It isn't anything from a known tool mark - but it is interesting.

I just reviewed it all again, and it has to be some extra glass or just a marked dip mold - I guess you pictured the bottle with the bottom picture. It is a neat old bottle for sure. RED Matthews

A big bubble that popped during manufacture and melted back into the glass?

That's good possibility too Jim. There should be evidence of that with a loop or other strong magnification.
