I find that medicine interesting because it is an external treatment for hernias. Seems like a pretty odd concept to me. It was part of a combined treatment that involved an appliance and the medicine.
Most patent medicines fall into one of two categories, specifics (one or a few targeted afflictions) or panaceas (a wide spectrum of afflictions targeted).
I find specifics typically more interesting because its more evident what the goal of the inventor was and how effective the actual treatement might of been.
