It does have that insulator shape, but depending on the depth of that top indent, most insulators were made to shed rain and snow, and that would probably hold water and freeze and perhaps break? That's what made me look at it other ways..

Joe,
The season was a little slow this year. We had a long dry season and it hurt the tops on the ginseng. It is about all gone now with the couple of hard frosts and wind we have had in the last week. Found a area about 40 minutes from here that must have had a few rain showers that we didnt get early in the year. The ginseng therte looked good and salvaged what would have been a horrible season. Sure is fun to hunt tho. Managed to add a few big old roots to my flower bed too. My wife loves that! (LOL)[:D]. I have to watch her in the Spring to make sure she doesnt weed them. Still managed to dig right at 2 lbs dry this year. Here is a big old beautiful 4 prong from early in the season.

Thanks Joe!
On a normal season without the drought my Dad and I will dig about 4 to 5 lbs each up here. This has been an off season but it is still enjoyable no matter what. My wife said the green thing looks like some sorta art deco drinking glass. I shoulda got the camera out as I dug it out. It looked really cool about 8 inches down in the ground. I had a neat glow to it. Also my Dads 87 year old cousin still managed to go out sengin with us a couple times. Moving a little slower each year but he doesnt miss a thing.

It looks like a really wierd insulator to me.[&:]

This is my guess also , but as Joe states the indent on top is odd. It does show a little wear inside the indent like something rubbed on it but anything dug can show signs of wear on it. Maybe an insulator that was held by the top and the bottom??

Kevin,...cool post. Any luck with the Ginseng? Tom and I were out hunting it last weekend. Maybe your cool green thing had a turned wood base and held something like a candle? Whatever it is it's cool..
Joe ,
Did you and Tom find any this year? Was it dry over there also?
Kevin.

Kev,...we didn't have any luck last weekend, but had some people along that normally wouldn't be with us, and we didn't get to tramp around the woods as much as we needed to. Also just got Tom into looking for it with me,...I used to go hunt it years ago, and an old friend rekindled my interest... Do you guys replant the berries/seeds? The top that you're holding in the pic is BIG. [:D] I knew one spot where it always could be found that an old timer showed me when I first discovered ginseng, but apparently someone dug it all out of there.....

Joe,
Yup , we always plant the berries. Gotta keep the patch growing. I like to dig about a 2 to 3 inch deep trench and and plant the berries in a nice row about 3 inches apart. Sometimes it can be a long trench or a couple of rows depending on the ammount of berries on the pod. So if you are ever in Northen Ohio and see little seng plants growing in a row , you know I was there once! I like to try and save the monster roots in my flower garden and plant the berries from them in my Dads woods. I have one out there from this season that was one root with two big ole 4 prong tops comming off of it. Now that will put out some berries next year![:)] The ones in this picture I did not dig . I did plant the berries tho. These will be nice big ole plants in bout 10 years and hopefully the berries I planted will be this size or a little bigger.
Kevin.
