Found my first sign today, some kind of measuring scale. It’s heavy as all get out and has porcelain on both sides. Saw one listed on eBay as an oil tank gauge but seems a bit overbuilt for that. It was on the Mississippi but in a dump layer.

Looks to me to be a measuring scale to tell the flood stage of the river.

Increments of 2/100 foot = 0.24 inch seems pretty fine, and not terribly useful if the water is not still -- in this picture one would be hard pressed to tell the level to the nearest 1/10 foot = 1.2 inches, but here is an image of the same ruler, in Oregon.
