It does have a polished pontil, and also parts of the base rim were polished so it won't wobble. It is a 4-part mold.

Well congrats and thanks for the 4 piece confirmation. I may have to draw a line in the flask book. I thought maybe the drawing was off.
You also showed what I thought was extra scroll way up top. After looking at your pic and the original again I can see it was just the angle of the ebay pic showing the backside through.
That is a cool bottle! I'd never find a shelf to fit it on here (not for over crowded shelves, just no space period) but I like it.

wow , its amazing the difference a decent photo makes.
If the seller posted that I think there would have been some different comments.
Just more evidence how photos can be deceiving.

looks totally different ...

it sure looks a heck of a lot better then it did on ebay... what a great present! So what were these things used for? Considering the work that went into polishing the pontil and base it wasn't any regular old production piece to sell whiskey?

yes, good question.
Maybe they were used as bar decanters?
Typically pontil marks were ground on bottles intended to be handled and set on furnature without scratching it up.
For instance colognes, barber bottles, perfumes, back bar bottles, etc.

So you guys don't think it could have been made as a prize, or a club membership piece, or ceremonial implement?

I have no idea.
It might help to know approximately how many were made.
Its way out of my collecting domain.
Has one ever been found with a label?
