Hello I have a demijohn that is open pontiled and blown in a three piece mold. What I would like to know is how come the seams running around the shoulder of the bottle do not match up. Why didn't the mold maker make the top two pieces the same size? One side is an inch longer than the other. I do not feel it adds any value or makes it any rarer, but I have never seen this before usually on a three piece mold the seam running around the circumference of the should matches up. I would love to hear some thoughts.

I figured I would show the whole bottle as well.

Well Travis this is a new one for me,on a demijohn, but logical because of the size and clearance needed to lift the product out of the mold while still attached to the blowpipe. No doubt the taller back half of he mold was attached to a post on the workstation. In this way when the parison was blown, the back half of the mold shoulder could be tripped back – possibly with a foot peddle, while the attendant opened the front top shoulder and the front half of the mold, so the bottle blower could lift the product out of the mold assembly, for empontilling and release of the product, for the finishing of the tapered applied and the tooling of the finish.

I like to see sloppy glass like that under a finish. I also noted that there is about 3/4†of neck (mold formed) that would show seam extension, and then a tapered section that stretched when the glass was lifted off the bottom plate.

I also like the bottle and would like it in my own collection. I just like things like this that are different. Thanks for asking - I hope this answers your questions. RED Matthews
