Good thought, Steve.

Thanks, Ian for showing us these well tended graves with the Coca-Cola twist. The stones look pretty aged, are there no DOD's?

What are the porcelain looking items decorating the graves? Can you guesstimate their vintage?

It looks like people have been leaving flowers. Speaks well of the community or the caretakers.

That last pic gives me the creeps. I'm guessing that is a dead baby. Not sure what people were thinking taking pics of the dead and with the dead. Not something I would want to remember them by.

Back then when Photos were first started people still did not understand a pic to tin. So they took pictures of the dead because they through the persons Soul could get out. [8|]. The book of the Dead !! [8D]

Hey Dustin,

T'was a dead baby for sure. This was part of a 19th Century sensibility that is not too well understood in the 21st. Memento mori don't play well these days.

Here's a book that would give you a better feel for the photo-sociology of it.

I think a lot of people didn't get the opportunity to have their pictures taken while living. The postmortem photograph was the only time some of them could get a picture of their loved ones. They did some things back then that we might consider weird, such as making lockets and shadowboxes and "hair art" out of a deceased person's hair.
