Hi,

I stumbled upon this site while trying to find out some information about this glass bottle/jug I have. I don't know if it is pre-1900 but it doesn't have any mold lines so I decided to post it here.

I do not have much knowledge re: this category of glass but I will do my best to describe the jug. It is a light olive green, or more accurately, a "smoky" olive green if that makes sense. Height approx 6", base diameter approx 5". There is an applied ring of glass just below the opening at the top. There is an applied handle; at first, I thought that the handle was applied in two sections, but it appears that maybe the handle was all one piece but someone "pinched" it to make that little flap for your thumb to rest while pouring the contents of the jug. The bottom is very concave, and there is a rough pontil scar there. There is an applied seal on the front of the jug. There are a lot of wavy "swirls" in the glass, and I see air bubbles and some sediment in the glass.

I am curious about this jug because I simply cannot find another one like it anywhere on the internet! But maybe I just don't know the proper keywords to search. It seems to have characteristics of the antique "black glass" but I don't know if this is that old, or a recent reproduction trying to look old. It is in good condition, no damage that I can see, very little dirt inside of it, so I imagine it is probably a modern jug... also, as I was researching on the internet I didn't see any of the old black glass with this type of applied handle. But heck, you never know... so I thought I would post it here and see if anyone here has any thoughts on it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look!

The first bottles I bought were complete crap. I wish people would make their mistakes and not just throw the hobby out the window because they are initially uncomfortable. You win some you lose some but in the end it's all about learning. So Caroline! Don't give in because it. Ends up being tons of fun if you stick with it.

Hi Nic,

Thank you so much for the support, and oh I definitely am not giving up :) !!!! What I meant by "not my comfort zone" is that I am an avid glass collector, but just not this genre of glass. I love the Victorian and EAPG glass, as well as 20th century kitchen/serving/decorative especially Italian. This green jug intrigued me because I knew that it likely being a reproduction, the "reproducers" went through A LOT of effort to create it, not your typical mold-produced stuff to vaguely mimick. Att first I thought maybe Pilgrim/Blenko/Rainbow etc but ruled those out pretty quickly. So I started to look around online and couldn't find any that were like it, so it made me want to solve the mystery all the more :)... then there's always that thought that maybe it really IS an old one! Even though deep down I knew it was very unlikely, there's always that chance! :D

Oh yes, I too have bought tons of junk glass, most of it due to cluelessness during the learning process, some on purpose for research, etc. I see bottles & flasks, etc at sales & auctions all the time but I have nearly ZERO knowledge of them and would probably end up buying all of the reproductions lol... so I steer clear of them..

But now that I found this site I can pop in now and then and read through the posts, that's how I have done much of my learning :)

So here is a photo of one of my curios packed full of some of my glass treasures <3
