On 9/11/2001 the World Trade Center towers were destroyed. The debris from the collapse scattered over a large area and burried many smaller buildings. These small buildings contained many luxury stores, and for many months they were completely sealed under over 50 feet of steel and concrete, a modern Pompeii.

Five months into the salvage effort this photo was taken. It was taken by a friend of mine, and this is the first time it is being shared publicly. It depicts a crewman unearthing a hoard of wine bottles from inside a recently opened chamber, part of a crushed store.

Very little is written of this strange time and place that existed for a short while within the footprint of the collapsed Trade Center. Tales exist, that are substantiated by my friends as well as documented NYC police reports, of men breaking into the exclusion zone to illegally tunnel into and loot the luxury stores buried below. Millions of dollars in gold bullion, jewlery, and Rollex watches were taken in these raids.

In the early months of 2002 salvage crews broke through to entirely intact structures, the deepest burried places. Here they discovered stores, news stands and cafes completely frozen in time. Breakfast still sat on plates upon tables, coffee still in the cups, coats and purses still resting on chairs, even an ATM machine still with an ATM card in it and a receipt, the time recorded on it from the moment the plane had impacted.

Within the year all these macabre time capsules were completely demolished. It was a strange world that existed but briefly in a strange time 22 years ago this month.

The pulverized remains of the victims of 911 were likely scattered amongst the ruins these ghouls trod upon, in their haste to rob their graves. For some, nothing is sacred in their lives but the filthy lucre. Such a disgusting aspect of a most horrific crime.
