I found these bottles in the woods near my house. Although I keep old bottles I find, I am by no means a collector. Was just curious about them. Thanx for any info.

The Hires bottle (actually I have 2 the same) has a light green tint, bubbles in glass, very heavy/thick bottom. Front says "Hires", back says "trade mark registered".

The Coke bottle also has a light green tint. It has a smooth body w/ "Coca Cola" on front, "minimum contents 6 1/2 fluid ounces" on back. Around the base it has "Altoona Pa" on the front and on the back "D.O.C. 1017". The botom of the bottle has "Coca Cola".

Your bottles are referred to as straight sides, the Coca Cola Altoona, Pa. is common but in the condition you have in the pictures, should run around $75.00±. Can't help with the Hires. Nice finds. Take a look at the link for more info on the Coke.

Most of the old embossed Hires bottles were amber with the Hires on the base along with ribs on the base. I have seen that same Hires bottle (the one I descriped above) in aqua but I have not seen yours. Does it have a aplied crown?

zoid,

What bottleboy is referring to is how is the top made. Crown tops when first introduced were finished with a finishing tool in the shape desired, crown top in this case. The crown tops came out around 1892, and were hand finished until the Owens automatic bottle machine came out in 1902. He's trying date the bottle. My guess is late teens judging by the Coke bottle. I the seam goes all the way to the lip of the bottle it's ABM, if the seams stop on the neck it's a finished top. You should be able to see some concentric lines going around the top of the bottle, and see where the seam is obliterated. Again check out the link below for a better explanation of tops. The BLM site is one of the best I've seen for bottles, check out the rest of the site when you have time.

Thanx for the info. Both bottles (Coke & Hires) have the seam stopping below the top. The top, or last 3/4" of the bottle shows no seam.

Wainzoid,

I think you have an early Hires bottle. Probably before the turn of the 20th Century. I'd say it's value is $75.00 plus depending how much a collector wants to pay. Look at this web site.

Nice Find,
