Howdy! I think 5/16" or 3/8"is a good diameter myself. This one is 1/4".You have to hold it a little tighter to avoid flex, but it sinks pretty easily. Too much flex and I would shorten the probe or thicken the shaft. I'm using a ball tip to avoid damage to the glass. Points Hurt!
I think it has alot to do with the soil.
The harder the soil, the thicker the probe necessary. A 1/2" is hard to bend,but hard to push. I saw a fiberglass probe the other day, But I am going to go with spring steel.
It has A distinctive ring when it hits bottles and a slightly diffferent ring for rocks.
There's no electricity where I'm digging. But definately insulate.
