Anyone know what these are? They feel like there is a thin rubber material on the outside and maybe slate inside? I found them in an ashy layer after some rusty material.

@Cyberdigger, thanks. I will definitely not do that! I will wash my hands. Should I just throw them away? How old do you think they are? This will help me decide if I should continue digging where I found them.

True, they are good for context.. I've seen them in 1950's digs and sometimes mixed with earlier stuff..
