I was on the computer looking at this photograph when Rubye walked in behind me. She said “Oh my God, look how youngâ€.......I peered at the photograph again....what ever did she mean? Was it Herb's impish smile? Was it my hippie hair & red reading glasses? Had it been that long ago.

It seemed like only yesterday........young entrepreneurs in the pursuit of adventure. The photograph a snapshot in time of some treasure found... Smiles abound...although the day had been long, it had been fruitful. Those twinkles of the eye are genuine....Let us pose for the camera.

We had spent the day, at an old dump site in Sacramento, Cal. The three of us were experienced in the art of bottle quest, but this dump site was slightly different. I had been to this location numerous times & been extremely successful....I was sharing it with Herb & Jim for their first time.

I give both guys credit for jumping in, no questions asked, and getting right to work. We attacked the site and carved out the treasure you see. Herb found the first bottle...the free blown gin. When he first saw the bottle it was laying amid several bricks...he thought the square shape was a brick itself until he lay his hand upon it. The smooth texture of glass & a raw pontil were a dead give away.

As we worked in earnest....Jim found a chamber pot & J.H.Cutter Whiskey fifth.

Herb found his second bottle a B&G San Francisco soda...graphite pontil...Herb's a soda guy & you know this made his day.

Meanwhile I worked a little area & found two graphite pontiled sodas... A M McFarland & Lancaster Soda works. The prize of the trip for me was a blue & white compote from Southern Pacific R/R.

Sacramento, California is the home of the Central Pacific R/R (of transcontinental R/R fame.....Promontory, Utah 1869 ) & later Southern Pacific R/R. This compote is the Harriman pattern Ogden & Shasta sunset routes & dates from the turn of the century....an unusual piece in form. I'll also picture a tea cup & creamer in the Harriman pattern just for grins.....also found in this splendid dump.

As the smiles attest....a good time had by all.[:)]

sweet! I love soda's... So i guess they felt the need to mark their wares as a theft deterrent? Those big bold in your face marks say, "you'll never forgot you took me"!

Surfaceone.........Excellent S.P. sign.....Ok on to your other question....Jim passed about 6 years ago.....I'm sure he's tearing up heaven....That man lived to dig bottles & to love his grandchildren.

I'll get on Herb to post....Yes he & I still "bottle quest" although time has hurt us both. His back is toast...and I have a new knee. Last year I only scored a cathedral pepper sauce....the year before I found a one of a kind San Francisco soda that now resides in a prominent S F collection $$$$$....I have been going about this thing for nearly 50 years...it has taken its toll....I work smarter now ...and have chosen avenues that really "turn me on"....I love old bottles.....don't get me wrong... I have been fortunate to find "other treasure" that just blows me away. I concentrate much effort in that direction. I follow the path that has been put before me.....I can't believe my good fortune.

Is this an answer to your question?[:)]

tique710..........I bet the grandiose logos & design did dissuade people from stealing.....but what about those sweet creamers...just pocket size....a souvenir indeed. Actually all of the railroad companies set an ellegant table.....It must have been quite an adventure to travel turn of the century railroad.... [:)]
