I was on the computer looking at this photograph when Rubye walked in behind me. She said “Oh my God, look how youngâ€.......I peered at the photograph again....what ever did she mean? Was it Herb's impish smile? Was it my hippie hair & red reading glasses? Had it been that long ago.
It seemed like only yesterday........young entrepreneurs in the pursuit of adventure. The photograph a snapshot in time of some treasure found... Smiles abound...although the day had been long, it had been fruitful. Those twinkles of the eye are genuine....Let us pose for the camera.
We had spent the day, at an old dump site in Sacramento, Cal. The three of us were experienced in the art of bottle quest, but this dump site was slightly different. I had been to this location numerous times & been extremely successful....I was sharing it with Herb & Jim for their first time.
I give both guys credit for jumping in, no questions asked, and getting right to work. We attacked the site and carved out the treasure you see. Herb found the first bottle...the free blown gin. When he first saw the bottle it was laying amid several bricks...he thought the square shape was a brick itself until he lay his hand upon it. The smooth texture of glass & a raw pontil were a dead give away.
As we worked in earnest....Jim found a chamber pot & J.H.Cutter Whiskey fifth.
Herb found his second bottle a B&G San Francisco soda...graphite pontil...Herb's a soda guy & you know this made his day.
Meanwhile I worked a little area & found two graphite pontiled sodas... A M McFarland & Lancaster Soda works. The prize of the trip for me was a blue & white compote from Southern Pacific R/R.
Sacramento, California is the home of the Central Pacific R/R (of transcontinental R/R fame.....Promontory, Utah 1869 ) & later Southern Pacific R/R. This compote is the Harriman pattern Ogden & Shasta sunset routes & dates from the turn of the century....an unusual piece in form. I'll also picture a tea cup & creamer in the Harriman pattern just for grins.....also found in this splendid dump.
As the smiles attest....a good time had by all.[]
