Hi everybody,

Recently found a shard of an 8-sided aqua Liverpool medicine.
W & J FERGUSSON
(?)TRAND STREET
LIVERPOOL

One side says: (TA)BLESPOONFULS
Another side is: IN SIX PARTS
Bottom has a number: K 5772

Definitely a crier for me, never found a British medicine before. What do you think about this one?

Thank you for looking,
Konstantin

That is an interesting piece. Are you in the U.S? Where did you find it? I'm guessing in the water by the look of it. Must have been thrown overboard eh? I don't know anything about English bottles but I like it!

hello,
yes, I'm in the US. I found it in the Ocean off the East Coast.

That looks fairly typical of smooth base English medicines. The embossed contents measure is common, but not so frequently found on bottles with so much other embossing. It has a 1870s - 1880s look to it. Not hugely valuable as there are so many thousands of variations of local embossed meds in England.

It's interesting that such a late English med turned up over that side of the Atlantic. It's more common, in my experience, to hear of earlier types turning up, especially on the east coast of the US. I guess that's a result of trade patterns changing over time, especially as the US became much more self sufficient in home-grown patent meds from the 1840s onwards, and imported fewer British ones.

Wow. Would be very interesting to know a bit more about which codds and meds turn up around there! Do you know which companies the codds and meds are mostly from?
