I dont know the whole story on the crown stoppers but a have a few thoughts.
Most of the original condition (basement mint) bottles with the crown stoppers I have seen were Rexall drugstore bottles.
Rexall originally came from the Rx pharmacy abbreviation. I'm guessing the crown was inspired from Rex (latin for king) and I have seen Rexall advertised as the king of drugstore chains.
As Rexall was probably a competitor to Owl Drug I wouldnt expect Owl bottles to have crown stoppers.
just all conjecture of course.

As previously stated I don't know Jack but Rexall didn't come about until 1902, maybe that fits into your time line?

I have seen metal crown stoppers on Rexall bottles but never saw one on a milk glass bottle...but I was never looking either.

Seems to me you were discussing both, unless that qoute from you is wrong....
