Hi Everyone,

Has anyone come across this misspelled H.J. Heinz bottle?
They left off the h in Pittsburgh. It looks like they ran out of room and said screw it!
H47 on base.
5 1/4" tall
Tooled top.

That's not a misspelling, in 1890 the federal government decided to standardize the spelling of place names and declared that any city ending in "burgh" should end in "burg" instead. A lot of people in Pittsburgh weren't happy about this (including the city government which continued to use the H) and the federal government decided to make an exception for Pittsburgh in 1911. You'll see a lot of uses of "Pittsburg" during this period. https://web.archive.org/web/20081001234852/http://www.carnegielibrary.org/exhibit/hname.html
