The Californians seem to have a lot of unique bottle terms... sort of like the Hawaiians with waves or the Eskimos with snow.
Someone should send an anthropologist/linguist out there to study them[;)]

If you look at some 2000 year old Roman bottles (and even some 200 year old bottles) a lot of the original glass will be eroded.
It looks cool but is a destructive process for the glass. It can probably be compared to iron rust but a much slower reaction.
Given enough time and the right conditions the bottle will totally erode to nothing.

ORIGINAL: rockbot

I used to refer that look to opalescent. Like the opal gems found in Australia. I believe its formed by a similar mechanism but obviously over millions of years.

Mineral water fills cracks in the earth and evaporates. This process continues over and over forming opals. What we see on bottles is a mere 100 years or so. Just imagine what it would look like in a million years![;)]

Thats what I call it Rock "Opalescent" always did

There's more to those "record grooves" than just sickness.. they were apparently formed when the bottle was blown.. I wonder if they were detectable at the time they were in historical use.. some bottles have such pronounced grooves you can feel them, and they are not always stained or mineralized.. if you are patient, and have good lighting, you can always follow the bands down to a specific point. Some are more contorted than others. Specimens with applied lips usually demonstrate my point, though I admit I haven't seen everything yet..

I think I have a bottle you're talking about... This one's got some in-making lines... I'm confoozed... [>:]
