I seem to have myself a Real Inkwell Mystery on my hands and I need some expert help.

Last Spring I managed to collect well over a 1,000 bottles from an 1800’s dumpsite here in Key West, FL. The dirt the glass was in was being moved at a very fast rate and I had to run in a grab what I could between the loader and the dump trucks that we moving it. So, at the end of the day a basically had an entire pick up truck bed full of bottles.

Well, that was a year ago and I still haven’t had the time to go through everything I have.

So, Last night I was showing a friend all the Bottles I haven’t looked at yet and noticed this umbrella inkwell with what I thought was a broken off neck. I remember looking it over and putting it in the box before. But, like I said, I thought it was broken.

As I looked at it closely it looked to me as if it was made this way, like it was made without a neck.

Can any of you chime in on this?

Thanks!

Rick

Sorry I forgot to rotate them....

This is what I think it's supposed to be.

I agree. looks like that's the way it was made. Hopefully someone with ink knowledge chimes in, I'd like to hear what the scoop is...

I almost chimed in at the first pic, sure glad I didn't. I was thinking ocean tumbled then. Now I'm thinking more a ships bottle made and/or adapted to that way. It looks correct to me.

IMO; After looking at the pictures provided, the top has been broken off.

That's what I was thinking. The the rough edges got smoothed out over time. (some how)
