I found this bottle diving. At first I thought it was deformed in a fire. Then I was told that its a very old bottle. Does anyone have any thoughts on how old this bottle is? I'm guessing maybe around the American Revolution?
Well (d12016466). I have to agree it is old. In the second picture you can see the roll-out of the bottle heel. This was caused by the method of creating the push-up in the glass cylinder body of the bottle using either a mollete or a cone piece on the floor. What puzzles me is that I do not see the same form in your first picture. I would like to see some more pictues of he finish. It is obviously applied glass but I would like to see it all the way around.
From my Glossary I offer the following description of the tool mentioned. Molette:[/b] A glass making tool that is shaped like the tapered push-up needed in the bottom of the bottle. After the body of the bottle was shaped on the marver table for the wall structure and part of the bottom flattening done with the battledore, the blow pipe was handed to an associate bottle maker who turned it over putting the mouth end of the blow pipe on a stone or locator tool on the floor and the wooden handled molette head was pushed down into the bottom glass to shape the push-up taper. Then the bottle was ready for a prepared disc pontil with glass chips clinging to its’ edge; which was placed in the taper to empontil the bottle for the severing of the blowpipe.
