I have been looking through the Sanborn maps in my area looking for older dumps. Thanks guys for the tips on the Sanborn Maps. Those things are great. Well I noticed a gulley that was right behind a downtown row of stores.
Part of the gulley is still there. The bad news is that the whole thing is covered in Wisteria. If you look at the top of the picture , you can see the outline of the stores. This stuff must be the cousin of Kudzu. Everything is covered with this stuff.
I found this ink imbedded into a side of one of the banks of one of the smaller gullies. And yes, that's a wisteria vine holding it in place. It's an early abm unembossed. I'll have to put this one on the back burner for next winter. I may try to locate the stream that forms at the bottom of the gully and do a little probing.
There's no way to bush-hog this place. I should have got a pic looking down into the gulley from the back of the stores. Just drops off straight down. There is a road now that goes behind the stores. This road did not exist on the early 1900 Sanborn maps. I'm hoping that not all of the mid 1800 dump didn't get covered by the road. The town was built on the edge of the gulley and expanded northward. Take a look at this pic. I'm down in part of the gulley and looking up at the Courthouse in the middlle of town. There's gotta be some old stuff down in here, because there's been no developing in the gulley since the town was built.
