Found this today, thought it was a canning jar, but it ain't. So what is it. Because of the eyes in the lid, I'm thinking something hung off the lid in suspension in the liquid that stained the inside of the vessel. The bottom is very clear glass. The clamp is iron. The lid has a patent date of June 11, 1895. The black rubber gasket is probably original to the jar. Pressed glass jar with very fine sanding of the top to make the seal. I'm calling it my super secret scientific Sunday surprise until I find out what is really is. It is about 10" tall in total, 4" across the base and the side glass is about a quarter inch thick. That's an interesting jar. Some of those old jar closures can be pretty hard to find, but I don't know about that one.

Thanks Eric, I now understand that looking up stuff by the patent date is much easier than the last time I tried it a few years ago. I now need to look up the chemical properties of formaldehyde to see what its effects might be on glass. This thing is very cloudy. Whithall Tatum usually has some kind of a logo on their stuff, but nothing on this one. For the 20 bucks I spent on it, I'm really happy. Think I'll get a specimen from one of the mice my cats drag in and hang it in the jar. Scott

It looks like it's made for cherubs but I suppose mice would work. [:D][attachment=Clipboard01.jpg]

It may be a type of battery jar. Two different electrodes could hang in an electrolyte creating a voltage potential. Just a guess. Is it pontiled on the bottom? I may have seen one like it in an antique shop that was a gallon in size. It was $150 I believe.

Definitely a museum specimen jar. The specimen could be hung from the little eyes if need be. I have several sizes with specimens and I put them out for Halloween. They are fairly collectible and there was a fellow on the forum advertising for them recently.
