My grandmother recently went into a home, and my grandfather died about 20 years ago. He was big into collecting bottles, and only kept the good ones. He found these around 40 years ago, and said they were antiques then..... They are now in my hands, and trying to figure out if they are worth anything, as they do me no use. Anyone know anything about these? They dont have any writing on them at all.....

Thanks

Also... the other bottle has this weave or something on it. It looks like it was made right on the bottle and wont come off unless I damage the weave material. I didnt want to damage it, so left it on. Any ideas on these 2 bottles? I know nothing about them...

Hello! These bottles were for wine.. the ones in the basket weave are called demi-johns, used for storing homemade wine.. the other one is a wine decanter, the strange pocket on the side held ice to chill the wine without diluting it..

The demijohn is probably going to sell better if you take the wicker off.. I'd like to see a pic of the lip and also the bottom to get an idea how old it is.. the wicker on the bottom might be hiding a pontil mark, which would add value..

Ok, we are taking it off now, and will take some pictures and post in about 5 minutes.

OK.. I don't see a pontil mark but it does have an applied lip, so I'd guess it's from around 1880 or so.. the decanter is probably newer and from Italy..

Sometimes people don't want to hear 5 to 10 bucks, but you have to tell it like it is.[:)]
Most (non bottle) people think they got a fortune on there hands. To bad that is not the case 99.9% of the time.I wish it was. [;)]
