I recently acquired this black glass ale bottle. I've been trying to find one for a while now at a reasonable price. This one is a real beauty with a crude lip, nice shiny glass, and faint pontil scar.

When I got it home, I was examining it after it had been sitting in my warm car for awhile and this thick brown goo started oozing out. Smelled like wood stain or paint or something. I guess it was not uncommon to re-purpose these old bottles. After soaking it in Varsol for awhile and ruining some copper shot, I think I got most of the excess goo out. I think it still has a layer of stain on the inside, so it probably looks darker than it really is. Anyhoo, just though I'd share. Think it's the oldest one I've got now, I'm guessing early 19th century?

Hello Dan, I think it is a great example of early black glass. I would think it is very early 1800s or maybe even late 1700s. I have one here on my desk that has a similar top finish, similar pontil but maybe deeper - it is #4570 inv. so I will have to look it up for more info. Mine needs cleaning and it is a lighter green than most black glasss is. You have a neat one for any collection. RED Matthews

Thanks for the comments. It has some wonky crudeness to it that's for sure. Gotta love it!
