Hi, I just bought this at an auction but wanted to get some opinions on it. I think it's either a 2 or 3 gallon. The form looks unusual to me. Any thoughts on the date and region where it was made? It's salt glaze underneath. Also, should I leave the paint on or take it off? I do think it's pretty this way, but I'd always be wondering if there's a stamp or decoration underneath.

thats a tough one... Does it hold value with the paint? If it didnt I would dip that baby quick... even if there is not anything underneath I like the look of the salt glaze stuff...

The shape looks to be around 1800, give or take 20 years although I'm leaning towards the 1700's....

you should be able to tell with a close examination if there is anything under there, the early decorations were all glaze and would be raised a little from the surface...

Its an early one looks to date around 1810-1830 It mite have some blue decoration but there is also a good chance its simply plain. The form looks more midatlantic to me probably MD or VA Personally I'd clean off the paint and see whats under it. You should check the ears of the crock the tips of them where they join the body will either have some blue as an acccent or not. If the blue is present the crock mostlikely has other decoration on the front and back if the ears are plain then the crock is likely plain.

Thanks for the replies. I had a feeling it was that early, so that's good to know. Looking it over with a flashlight, and through the chips in the paint, I don't see any blue, so it's probably plain.

Good info. Stupid question, could you just clean/dip the back half first, I know it would ruin the painted value.

The paint job looks later and poorly done to me. I dont think it enhances the value. Just my opinion for what its worth.

I took it outside today and cleaned the paint off. No stamp or decoration underneath. Here's what it looks like now.

It is a nice crude one, with lots of specks and variations in the glaze.
