Returned today to the site of my last dig where I found the broken Snow ink and the Montague's Balm. I probed a likely spot a few feet over, expecting to find a later privy, hopefully from the 60's-70's. Got down to about the 3' level and dug a broken base and panel to a Bulls Sarsaparilla with iron pontil and was trying hard to look teal colored! Shortly after, a tiny X Basin Phila. smooth base showed up that looked like a typical Lubins from Paris, and this was just the fill! I had visions, of course, of dozens of Bulls pontiled at the bottom, or at least ONE! I think I have dug 20 busted ones, pontiled, smooth based, you name it and not a whole one in the bunch. Well, 3 hours later and about 7 feet deep, I had a small handful of shards, mostly pottery and dishware, and not much of that to mention! Dipped HARD! I think I counted a total of 8 bottles, 3 were whole and one at the very bottom I thought was whole until I turned it around and wiped it off! UGH! I found the gargling oil next to the wall at the bottom and though I have never seen one of these style pontiled, this one had me looking. It is as crude or more crude than many pontiled bottles. I must have dug a dozen of these in various color shades and ages, but this is by far my oldest looking one and the closest to Lockport green I have seen. Just not quite the brilliant emerald color, but real close!
