Hey Marjorie,

This is looking like a cool place for a dig. Are those sandstone foundation stones? Cypress shingles?

From when does the church date? What denomination? I've never dug a Church site, though I have recklessly eyeballed a few. I did dig a huge dump adjacent to (and perhaps also under) an old church cemetery, though I went no closer than 3 feet to the fenced cemetery.

Have you got nice sandy soil? Have you probed yet? Could be several privies, depending on the age of the church. Might also be a dump on the periphery of the cemetery.

Great picture! Atmospheric as all get out. Best of luck, Marjorie. I'm looking forward to your dig report.

I haven't gotten permission yet so I've only taken photos.....the two holes are right behind the church .....I've found out that it is an Episcopal AME...and the church was no longer used after hurricane Hugo damaged the property in '89.

I'm not sure how old it is, but it was the original AME church in this 1886 town....I don't know if those are cypress or cedar shingles and I will further inspect the foundation.......more info to follow.

Thanks for your replies!

Regards,
