There have been seveal articles written on these to the contrary. How does one determine the new from the old?

As you say there are articles on repro lids but unfortunately those articles are misleading and show some lids that are NOT repro. This only causes paranoia and confusion and probably doing more harm than the repros themselves.

The best way to avoid buying a dud is to gain experience and handle as many genuine lids and known repros as possible, you will soon learn to tell the difference.

A good place to find out if a lid is a repro is by posting a picture on www.bottledigging.co.uk/phpBB2/portal.php we have experts who can spot a repro from even the worst blurred Ebay images.

Hi bottledigging,

From memory the first article was in BBR, the second a show report by Paul Blomfield a couple of years back reporting on how many UK dealers suddenly had these forsale at a particualr UK show. I have found both sources more than reputable over the years.

You can rest assured any lids purchased from this seller are the real deal..
He is currently machine digging a tip in scotland and these lids come up quite regularly there,
If anybody in doubtful about a potlid or any other uk items post a message on the Uk bottle diging / collecting forum ,

Hi grimdigger, so just to clarify the repos have straight side edges and are not like these having a raised lip at the top of the sides, correct? Good to have a view from another perspective rather than just comparing faces.

Hi Gidday
Most of the Repros in the uk are straight sided as they would be easier to make..
There are a load of fake maws on at the moment,,have emailed the seller but no response as usual..
We have a fakes and repros section on the bottle digging uk forum and most of the recent ones have been paper label jobs that have been varnished over..
The members have been bombarding the sellers with emails and have had quite a few removed from sale recently
