One of my favorite bottle "go withs" is this desktop secretary, which was supposed to have been made by my great-great grandfather (b. 1824-d. 1914). I've been trying to pin down an approximate year that it was made. I've looked carefully to see if any of the nails in it are cut/square, but all nails were countersunk and puttied so I can't tell. So, if I can nail down a date for the inkwells (no pun intended), I can get an approximate age for it.
The inkwells are pressed glass, and have a checkerboard pattern on the bottom. I've seen these come out of 1880s dumps, but more commonly have also seen them in a number of 1920s-1930s dumps as well (presumably a lot of them were discarded when fountain pens became popular). Anyway, my question is what's the earliest date for this type of inkwell??
BTW, I display this piece using a couple of my favorite "other" inkwells. []
Anybody know when the pressed glass inkwells date from??
Thanks,
Rick
