Take a guess, I'll find out tonight when it cools off. Most of this stuff was one foot down, but I dug a square nail and china shard at three ft. [&:] Its hard dig.

Little bits Rick. Small white stuff, a med bottle neck, and one brown glass shard, like maybe a beer. Might just hit it in the morn. I'm burned out.

What the H are you digging in? It looks like pipes and maybe a cable or something.

anywhere you dig in my yard you will hit that sort of stuff 3 feet down.
They threw out ashes and other crap for 200 years.

That's where a good probe is a basic necessity. Unlikely a privy unless you find a side wall, soon. Also, we used to think the trees were planted on top of the privy for the extra nutrients, but haven't found to be the case, or almost never. You're likely too close to the big ass tree those roots belong to, though I recently hacked through similar sized roots to get to a 1850's privy. The trees know where the yum-yum is and head for it...one of my catch phrases is "follow the glass." When there is no glass, it's "follow the roots." Often the privy is close to the big trees, I presume the shade helped hold down the stench somewhat. Anyhoo, get a good probe. Jack

We have dug a lot of privy's with huge roots going down unto them. Sometimes through the walls. Trees like water and a lot of pits hold water.
