I HAVE READ ON HERE FROM TIME TO TIME ABOUT DIGGERS FINDING BOTTLES WHERE THERE ARE MOSTLY ROCKS THERE INSTEAD OF DIRT.

YEARS AGO I FOUND A LOT OF SHARDS FROM AN OLD HOTEL DUMP.[CIRCA 1870S-EARLY 1900S] BEING SO ROCKY I DID NOT FOOL WITH IT MUCH,THINKING ANY THING IN IT WOULD BE BROKEN. NOW I WOULD LIKE TO GO BACK AND TAKE A SECOND LOOK IF I GET ABLE. ANY ONE KNOW IF IT WOULD BE WORTH IT? I MEAN LITTLE DIRT AND BIG ROCKS.[NOT BOULDERS ,BUT FAIR SIZE ROCKS.] I JUST DON'T SEE HOW ANY WHOLE BOTTLES COULD HAVE FOUND THEIR WAY DOWN UNDER/IN BETWEEN THE ROCKS. ANY HELP?

THANKS ! JAMIE

Hi Jamie, if you find one bottle intact I would dig around. I've got many good bottles in rock and dirt dumps. My first local drug 1901 HILO DRUG COMPANY bottle was in 4 inches of dirt between football size rocks. Its pretty common around here since most of the island is rocks. lol
Go for it!

Jamie,...These two came out of an early 1800's farm field corner rock dump,....(of course the Maple trees along the farm path are mammoth and beautiful now,)....dug them this spring right under some maple sap buckets on the tree above us.... They are amazingly crude, early and fragile as all get out. [;)] Joe

I almost never find anything in old rock dumps, but I try to dig them anyways, cause you may luck out. I dug an old rock dump yesterday at the edge of an old farm, with no luck. There were a couple of pockets that survived whole, where a whole barrel or bucket of trash was thrown, with bottles inside, and the barrel protected them. In this dump, those whole, protected bottles were screw tops, and any old shards were smashed under the rocks.

You never know, you may luck out. It depends on how much time you have available. My time is pretty tight, so I tend to give it a half hour or so, then move on to see if I can find a better site. Good luck!

Jamie, this open pontil med came out of a small pocket of dirt just big enough to hold the bottle. It was surrounded by large rocks behind an old farm foundation. "Curtis & Perkins / Cramp & / Pain Killer / Bangor, Me. " Flared lip is mint, too. I say go for it.

I also concur with all of these staments. In Maine there are alot of rocks so much they make walls along the property bondries back in the 1800's. Now the answer to your question is, you dont know if those rocks were thrown there or always have been there. I have found dumps where an entire rock wall was made going over the dump. And like the other people have shown, you can pull bottles from anywhere. Some people used to purposefully place flasks or liqueur bottles to keep it away from the eyes of the wife. If your lucky you might find smaller bottles like inks. Either way its worth the time.

Found these two in the middle of the a solid rock dump.Hardly any dirt at all. Bottles do survive in "pockets".Give it a try Jamie.[;)]
