saving rusty lids

Pulled out a mason with wire still holding lid on. Nice color so i thought I'd keep this one. Will the wire turn to dust now that its out of the ground? Is there any way to preserve it?

Just give the wires a good scrubbing with a brillo pad & they should be fine. The neck-tie wires are usually a thinner diameter metal than the bail wires & are prone to breaking if badly rusted, but you should be able to tell what kind of shape the wires are in after a good cleaning. As long as they are not badly rusted, they will last a long time.
