I have a small medicine bottle (approx. 5 1/4 inches) that I am seeking information and possible value on. It is inscribed " Dr. H.M. Freeman, Chronic Diseases A Specialty (inside of what appears to be a horseshoe magnet with HMF monogram inside and wave design below,) Toccoa, GA. I live near Toccoa and I found the bottle about 10 years ago and know as much about it now as I did then. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That is a nice druggist bottle . Georgia has few towns that put out embossed druggist bottle , spicily small places like Toccoa , although there is a collage , and quiet a few famous persons have come from there . Its a good bottle, cant find anything in Dr freeman. made around 1870s to 1890s.

Thank you very much for the information. I tried to do some research in my spare time as to who Dr. Freeman may be, but came up empty. It truly was a pleasure to find a bottle that old with my home town on it and perhaps I will be able to find more information in the future.

Don't know anything about it other than I like it! Killer! Since you live nearby, I'd check city records, local newspaper archives, etc. There should be something on him somewhere.

If you search through THIS you'll find a couple references to Dr Henry M Freeman. It's up to you to make sense of them and research the rest though. I'm guessing around 1905 for a date though.Nice bottle.

Thanks for that link. It will make it a lot easier to find knowing what the H stands for. I am hoping I can find some info through the Toccoa Library or the Toccoa Record newspaper. I just have a hard time finding time to get over there while they are opened.

According to Transactions of the Medical Association of Georgia (1910) he was admitted into the Medical Association of Georgia in 1905. According to A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians (1917) he was in business with Dr. John Henry Terrell from 1905 until his death in 1908. The Era Druggist Directory of America 11th Edition (1905) shows only one pharmacy in Toccoa, which is McJunkins & Co.The Era Druggist Directory of America 12th Edition (1906) shows two pharmacies: Reid, W. R; and Woodall, J. W.The Era Druggist Directory of America 13th Edition (1908) also only shows Reid and Woodall. I don't have earlier records, so this is the best I can do. Not much help, really.

Thanks for the great info. It should make it easier to do further research on him and hopefully find out about how many bottles may exist.

How many exist and how many are known presently are two different things. What I'm sensing is that it was a private formula from a private practice and not a pharmacy bottle. Either way though, it cost a bit of money to get the mold done so making only one bottle doesn't make sense. If you find the doctors address there may be hundreds in the basement or buried nearby. The Food and Drug Act may have made selling them illegal. Well, his death may have had something to do with also.

I think how many are known is what I meant. I would really like to get another, but I haven't been successful yet. If I can figure out who owns the old pharmacies in town, there may still be one in the building, but finding the time is the difficult thing. I am thankful for all the great information though.
