I recently dug this "HUGE" Button. it is 2 1/8" in diameter and made of shell. I was digging about 4 ft down and hit a bundle of leather or some kind of cloth? so, I started pulling out the fabric (that was deteriorating) and out fell this cool button. there was nothing else in the wad of fabric. what could a button of this size been used for? maybe decorative?? and would a shell button, be older then a glass one? any opinion's would be appreciated. happy hunting!

Thanks diggerjeff, yeah it's the biggest button that I have ever seen or found. I really like it! I still wonder though, what it could have been on? I personally believe that it was on a carrying bag or a big pouch of some sort?? I have showed it to a couple of people that have been digging civil war relics and bottles for over 30+ years, and they have never seen one like it before. it's a very interesting piece! take care and happy hunting.
