The past 2 Thursdays I have been picking through the garbage being removed from a c. 1905 house that has been vacant for 30 years. Several years ago there was a garage cleanout at the same property from which I extracted about a grand worth of antique toys, the best item being a very rare early Pluto Platter which I sold for 556 dollars in July '09. I knew it was good, but not that good!! I then took my girlfriend out for an epic feast of mountains of crab legs, almost legendary in its unadulterated excess. I lucked on the stuff, then and now, because a good friend of mine lives next door and I saw the intriguing piles while visiting him.
Here is the "Pluto Platter":
Anyway, while rummaging around this last Thursday evening I found some goodies more up my alley than toys (while in the alley) and during the process a friendly older gentleman who lived on the other side of this vacant house came out to talk. He said that every Thursday earlier in the day some people come out and fill the 6 large garbage cans, then take off. He said that he had lived there 30 years and the house had been empty the whole time.
Interesting...
Any intact estates in houses vacant longer than I've been alive are sure to have some interesting stuff.
Guess I better head back this Thursday for a third round, eh? [8D]
So, here are a few of my many scores. Alot of the stuff salvaged consists of 1940s-70s paper items and catalogues, some kitchen tools, other tools, old china and cut crystal goblets, etc. These are most of my favorite finds, but I have other good stuff floating around too:
Six 1 dollar bills, 1 from '63 and 5 from '69 (I want silver and gold lol). Not bad money even nowadays! []
13 older "Pepsi-Cola" caps, 27 newer "Pepsi" caps all from Peoria, 2 miller high life and 1 unused Schlitz cap.
Very nice undamaged 12 sided spongeware bowl. It was inside the unusual crock pictured later, with newspaper from 1976 protecting it. Attractive piece.
So this thing is a 4 1/8th inch tall miniature butter churn with mini handles! WTF? I have never seen anything like it before so I would like your input on it, if you will. For a dollhouse? Given away like mini jugs? I don't get it??? [&:]
Landers, Frary & Clark lap coffee mill! Looks like it was painted many moons ago, I prefer the wood look but whoever did it did a good job. Someone will pay me 40 to 60 for it regardless though, lol.
Unusual crock that contained the spongeware piece. I am leaning towards this not being very old, but I have never seen this design so I dunno. The opening is lopsided/ovate (shouldnt be though). Anyone recognize it? Any good?
Massive dusty tome of a dictionary, from 1918. Has 2 full color plates of the silver and gold coins of the world. Pretty sweet.
Pocket paper seal-impressermabob
Heads I win. Tails you loose... Huh, I guess I won with this adventure!
Crazy what people throw away every day across America, eh? Wish I could get at it all!
