The past 2 Thursdays I have been picking through the garbage being removed from a c. 1905 house that has been vacant for 30 years. Several years ago there was a garage cleanout at the same property from which I extracted about a grand worth of antique toys, the best item being a very rare early Pluto Platter which I sold for 556 dollars in July '09. I knew it was good, but not that good!! I then took my girlfriend out for an epic feast of mountains of crab legs, almost legendary in its unadulterated excess. I lucked on the stuff, then and now, because a good friend of mine lives next door and I saw the intriguing piles while visiting him.

Here is the "Pluto Platter":

Anyway, while rummaging around this last Thursday evening I found some goodies more up my alley than toys (while in the alley) and during the process a friendly older gentleman who lived on the other side of this vacant house came out to talk. He said that every Thursday earlier in the day some people come out and fill the 6 large garbage cans, then take off. He said that he had lived there 30 years and the house had been empty the whole time.

Interesting...

Any intact estates in houses vacant longer than I've been alive are sure to have some interesting stuff.

Guess I better head back this Thursday for a third round, eh? [8D]

So, here are a few of my many scores. Alot of the stuff salvaged consists of 1940s-70s paper items and catalogues, some kitchen tools, other tools, old china and cut crystal goblets, etc. These are most of my favorite finds, but I have other good stuff floating around too:

Six 1 dollar bills, 1 from '63 and 5 from '69 (I want silver and gold lol). Not bad money even nowadays! [:)]

13 older "Pepsi-Cola" caps, 27 newer "Pepsi" caps all from Peoria, 2 miller high life and 1 unused Schlitz cap.

Very nice undamaged 12 sided spongeware bowl. It was inside the unusual crock pictured later, with newspaper from 1976 protecting it. Attractive piece.

So this thing is a 4 1/8th inch tall miniature butter churn with mini handles! WTF? I have never seen anything like it before so I would like your input on it, if you will. For a dollhouse? Given away like mini jugs? I don't get it??? [&:]

Landers, Frary & Clark lap coffee mill! Looks like it was painted many moons ago, I prefer the wood look but whoever did it did a good job. Someone will pay me 40 to 60 for it regardless though, lol.

Unusual crock that contained the spongeware piece. I am leaning towards this not being very old, but I have never seen this design so I dunno. The opening is lopsided/ovate (shouldnt be though). Anyone recognize it? Any good?

Massive dusty tome of a dictionary, from 1918. Has 2 full color plates of the silver and gold coins of the world. Pretty sweet.

Crazy what people throw away every day across America, eh? Wish I could get at it all!

Those are some great finds. I'd love to be a garbage picker. I used to find some good stuff here just walking around our neighborhood. Then 3 years ago the city started a new garbage policy and all trash has to be inside one of the city provided containers with the lid closed and pickup is only once a week by an automated truck. No fun anymore. I'm going to move someplace where you can still put your trash and broken tools and furniture out on the curb so someone who wants it can beat the garbage truck to it.

Great finds!

You just can't beat that price! Actually being paid $6 to haul off all these nice treasures!

What is written on the "Pocket paper seal-impressermabob"?

Let us know what you find this coming Thursday ;)

PS: Do you miss Quebec maple syrup?

Jays emporium- We have those same garbage cans here. 5 of the 6 at that house were of that type but when you see that many lined up you know it isn't normal weekly garbage being tossed. The upside of the containers is people are somewhat less prone to putting stuff in garbage bags. Last week I got a "Vital Wrap" hot/cold water therapy system at a different cleanout. I think they sell for 450 new, 50 on ebay used, but I gave it to the same friend who lives next to this house.

tigue710 - Yup my father has one that my grandfather got during WW2. Quarter sized, brass, and not family friendly!

oldihtractor - Believe me I thought about it, but I am already delaying my trip to Columbus so I can get at the stuff a third time. My girlfriend would kill me if I changed plans yet again. I might beg my friend to take a looksie every Thursday and set aside anything that seems good. Guess you could say he owes me a favor or 2 for that machine anyway.

lobeycat - Thanks for the guess, naturally there are differences (like the nonfunctional mini-handles and inset lip for holding a churn lid/functional lid) but so far that is the best I've got. Thanks for the pictures too.

AntiqueMeds - Yeah, that is how I felt. Heart jumped at first with the racing thoughts that there could be some big bills in that small wad but it is still great. Found a few pennies too (omg wow).

Nostalgia - That is how I saw it too; getting paid 6 bucks to haul away free antiques. Can't be beat, really. The sealermabob is apparently blank/unused, which may actually increase the value to someone who wants an oldschool one for their own purposes. I will certainly keep you posted on the upcoming finds, hopefully the 3rd time is the charm!

And yes, that Quebec maple syrup was pretty heavenly. I rationed it as best I could but it is long gone. Actually, the moment I pulled that spongeware I remembered you, your note including "Buy Quebec!" and of course that fantastic surprise can of syrup. I wish I had some irradiatable blobs from my area but even the most common ones are aqua, and sell for 30-40 plus.

SAbottles - Was there ever a relish for the Ladies, or was there some sort of cultural prohibition against them flavoring their toast? [:D]

Nice Finds Stephen. Dumpster diving is illegal in Georgia. The County went so far as to hire County Marshals to patrol dumpsters. Several people were given citations. I have heard reports that the marshals would hide out in the bushes to catch dumpster divers. Now that's putting taxpayer's money to good use.[:D]I think that they had budget cuts and are now down to one. Oh, and they will also give you a citation for burning in a steel drum.[8|]
I picked up a red spongeware crock at an estate sale a few years back. Seems like I payed $20 for it. Buster
