I was thinking of exactly this topic when I picked up anj open pontil Reeds magnetic liniment with this FLAW! It has exactly the same half moon shape mark, but the flange of glass actually sticks out away fron the bottle and the whole area is set into the glass about an 1/8".

another angle of it, I have a hard time getting the three dimensinal look of it, but the flange is not impressed into the glass, it stands out on its own, but it wiped out about 1/2 the embossing. I think it is fairly obvious it was pinched in the mold to make this mark. The biggest difference is that because the bottle is rectangular, it didn't meld back into the glass like a round bottle would.

justanolddigger,

That anomaly is found on all shapes of bottles. I have seen it on square bottles such as a Wishart's Pine Tree Tar Cordial and a Rosenbaums Bitters.

The gather/parison is always the same shape no matter what the mold shape. If a straight vertical mold seem pinches the parison its going to make a half leaf no matter what the mold shape.

What would be cool is to find a bottle where it was pinched in a corner section of the mold. You might get a bit different effect on the flap?

Here's something to ponder.. it's a TOC half-pint strapside flask with a flap that survived the whole process, though it got folded over on the top half by the lip tooling, presumably..
