I always figured the Iron Pontil came after the Open Pontil so I figure from 1850's but I'm no pontil expert, far from it. Leon.

Thanks Leon, I was just wandering through the ebay listings and the question just occurred to me as I was looking at various pontil types.

Iron pontil and graphite pontil are the exact same thing. Graphite is a misnomer, though, as there is no graphite in the pontil. Iron pontil is a better term for it.

Found this on Worthpoint interesting read ! The bare iron pontil apparently had a fairly narrow lifespan as the majority of these bottles date between about 1845 and the mid-1860s, though they can be as early as 1830s and possibly as late as the early 1870s. They are particularly common on mid-19th century soda/mineral water bottles but can be found on a wide variety of bottle types. Here is a beautiful iron pontil mark if needed for reference. this is a 1860's-70's Dyottville whiskey.

I've had my eye on a Dyotttville whiskey. They ain't cheap.
A friend of mine found one years ago with the internally threaded neck.
I guess this was a Dyott innovation and quite rare to find.
