All,
I've got a possible great dig coming up and was looking for any tips on how to crack open an old stone/mud/brick cellar that has been colapsed and filled in for over 100 years.

just waiting for a break in the heat wave for my buddy and me to tackle.

thanks,
john

I'd suggest digging down along the stone walls, both inside and out, and working your way towards the center....A probe may help you out as you proceed...try going down till you hit native soil if at all possible. Good luck and post your finds...

most old cellars are not overly large. id dig it just like a privy. even though it will be slightly longer and wider than a privy its not usually as deep so you dont need to haul buckets making it easier in my book. good luck. if it was abandoned or filled in prior to 1895 you will find some nice stuff.

have fun and keep a ton of water on hand to keep hydrated.
