Also found an 1889 Indian Head penny while sifting the privy dirt. It looks like it was almost new when lost. This plus the bottles tells me that I'm in an 1890s era pit.
Good stuff you found! How are you going to clean the penny? I used olive oil on a nickel I have, and it worked pretty well, but I wonder if there is a simple and effective way to clean coins.
A few words of advice: Using vinegar on coins is usually a bad idea. It wouldn't really matter on a coin in this condition though. The green corrosion on the coin will not come off no matter what you clean it with. Vinegar strips a layer of metal off the surface of the coin leaving it shiney but the coin will eventually retarnish. Any coins that have been cleaned with anything but soap and water are viewed as problem coins by collectors and this substracts greatly from their value.
Nice dollhead Dan,it looks a little older than the other stuff in the pit.It looks like the ones normally found in older holes.I don't know anything about dating or identifying them but some can be worth good money.I think the larger ones are more desirable.Good luck out there
