ORIGINAL: Bottles r LEET

xxfollyxx,
Thanks for the map. Is there any other way to change the year? Somewhere around 1985-89?
Sorry, whatever is there is there. More populated areas seem to have more years available, there probably wasn't much benefit to taking aerial pics of mostly woods.

here is a 1927 topo of the area, might have your road. Houses are marked with little black squares

here is the full link to the whole map

get to know this site, it has helped me immensely in New England

sometimes these topo's go back quite a ways. Also search for USGS maps of New England done in the 1850's and 1860's, they have every road and house at the time... I have them for Conn and Mass but not New Hampshire although they are out there... these maps are extremely accurate down to the curves in the road...

Your best bet is to research maps and local histories. This is a 1927 USGS map...the little black squares are house locations.
These can be easily correlated to modern day maps, and the roads also give you likely areas to search.
Visit a local library and look for local history books...they should lead you to good clues. Google maps/aerials can also be useful when compared against old maps.

here is another really cool map of Canaan and local area from 1860

Ok, THIS IS THE MAP YOU WANT!!!, and 1860 map of the area. This is out of an Atlas and each of the separate counties will be individually mapped possibly. With a little research you will be able to find more legible copies of this map, or you can order it I believe from this site.

Buy it here...

the industrial revaluation created a new world in New England. Homesteads settled in 17th and 18th century were abandoned by the cart load as small self sufficient farmers moved into the more populated towns and cities to work in the mills. Whole areas of New England were left to nature and often the population of these areas is just catching up to what it had one time been... The abandon lanes of New England are literally packed with old cellar holes, farmsteads and often even small towns whose only residents are now squirrel, chipmunks and other animals. There is a lot waiting out there to find! Stay close to the where the house and barn stood, check the walls really well in the barn yard...

That is a fun area to look around in...spent some time exploring Province Road and its offshoots when I was a kid (would have been around 1994). Found a lot of cellar holes but not many dumps...walked miles of stone wall listening for that telltale crunch of old tin cans. Did find about 1/2 of a Townsends in a cellar hole out Province Road, so there is definitely some potential out there!

The 1927 topo maps are probably your best source...if you have a chnace, you should get a set of those.
