ORIGINAL: blade

On Todd's web site, Soda & Beer Bottles of North America, the bottle is listed as having a inverted taper with a combination bottle closure and being circulated from 1864-1866.

This appears to be right but most shown with this lip are gravitating stoppers, this one is just like your's thiough Woody, I just don't know......

Excellent, Jim, that appears to be correct.

The concensus then is: "inverted taper".

If anyone has David Graci`s book "Soda and Beer Bottle Closures 1850 - 1910", it is on pages 3, 5, and 67. It was patented on Nov. 24, 1863 by W.A. Shaw of Boston, Mass. and he called it an elongated elastic gum stopper. It was basically a hollow rubber stopper that was inserted into the lip, which has a shelf that it seats against, and a wooden plunger would be forced into it, which would tighten it and seal it. I don`t know how well it worked, but it sure is interesting! If anyone has a chance to get this book, you should, it is extremely well researched with loads of pictures and descriptions of every bottle stopper style that we come across, and a lot that I`ve never seen before. I hope this info helps out!

Kate,
The bottle was made by Albertson. Your bottle is a gravitating stopper soda and takes the Matthews Gravitating stopper closure.
Bob recovered a few hundred of the glass stoppers at a lake in Wisc. Find his post on it and I bet he'll send you a stopper.
