Can anyone tell me what the F.D.A. base embossing on this ink stands for? I can't find it listed in any of my ink books. It's a nice little teal ink with an unfortunate lip chip.

It has a stringer of glass connecting the side and the base.

And of course the unfortunate chip! Still a cool little ink though. Thanks in advance to anyone who can solve the mystery of who made it!

Sounds about right, Jeff! Thanks, I have several different cones and domes with the same base embossing and I didn't have a clue as to what it stood for.

Hello amblypygi, I just read about your F D A ink bottle and think it is interesting. I didn't find any clue regarding the maker, but I did want to tell you about the uniqueness of this particular bottle. The web of glass you so nicely illustrated in your picture is what is called a birds-swing. In this case it was caused by the fact that the bottle maker had to form a parison that was off center ( or bent to the side) to get glass over into the mold area, away from the blowpipe center line, to give the fianl blow good distribution of glass thickness. In this process of movement, the parison collapsed enough for the top inside surface to make contac with the bottom inside surface. In that brief touch the two sides pulled the glass strand when the bottle was blown in the mold. Bird-swings and spikes are two dangerous happenings in bottle forming, because when the product is put into the bottle the swing or spike can become broken and in the case of foods, a shard of glass like that, when swallowed - can become a nightmare.

If you decide to sell it, I might be interested to have it for an example. In any event, I would like your permission to use the picture when I get a subject blog assembled for my homepage, on this subject. RED Matthews

Hi Red,

Thanks for the information; that's interesting. I can see where that would be a big problem in a product where the bird-swing could get swallowed and become a gut-perforator :)

You of course have permission to use the pictures for anything you want, and PM me if you would like a higher resolution copy. I can probably take a better one also. I'm going to be out of town until next Friday but I will respond to any messages after that.
