I picked up these two nice objects in Glassboro New Jersey. The Indian Maiden I am still trying to figure out what she might have contained. Her Lower portion pedestal is flattened on each side and is the widest point in the bottle suggesting a back bar sort of dencantur. The bottle is a very pretty pale sea green in color and is pontiled has a little base wear, stands 12 inches tall and has a lip similar to the Simons Bitters Bottle. The detail on the bottle is excellent except for her face which has a weak impression. If anyone here at the forum has ever encountered this one and knows anything in reference to what it might have contained or where it may have been manufactured I would greatly appreciate to hear from you.
The ladies spittoon is really quite explanatory. Those Victorian babes could chew with the best of them.Between the years of 1830 to 1880 tobacco chewing was widely accepted for both men and women as only affluent men could afford a good cigar. The ladies had the spittoons shaped like a ladies midrif. The mans spittoon was shaped more like a common deep bowl. The ladies in this time period were quite the abusers of tobacco and alcohol as evidenced by the amount of bottles we find in the privys. The majority of the bitters,Liquor, anything with alcohol were more then likely tossed down the pooper by the ladies who snuck it outside and drank to avoid being caught by their husbands. This spittoon has a historical connection to the Whitney glass works.
The color is dead on of other known Whitney products.
