Collecting Started In My Youth. As a teen my friends and I collected beer cans. I still have a small collection of these, but no longer actually collect them. Over the next many years I collected beer glasses and soda cans. I still collect pilsener beer glasses but no longer have the soda can collection. It had become to large (24000+) and it was no longer fun. Besides at the time I was also collecting historical embossed beer bottles. This bottle passion is still going strong. It all began with the beer bottle shown here. Nothing really special, yet it is the bug that bit me. I was downtown here in Macon, visiting the BOURKE STREET FLEA MARKET run by the late Cleo Wiggins who was a good friend of mine. I stopped in frequently to shop and mostly visit. After one such visit as I was leaving I saw this embossed beer bottle setting on a shelf marked at $2. I picked it up looked it over and thought that it was pretty cool. I set it back down and left. About halfway down the block I thought... man that really was a cool bottle... I went back and bought it. After this first one I started looking for them, long story short after 35+ years I've accumulated over 2000+ and still look for more. As to why I enjoy them so much I cannot answer, but I like researching the history of the companies, I think about the old timers who carved the molds and marvel at the skills they had to be able to carve the molds on a curved surface BACKWARDS!! Incredible talent. I admire the crudity of the old glass compared to modern glass, it was often full of bubbles, uneven and heavy. I guess that I look at them as fragile art pieces deserving of preservation. |
