I just posted a picture of the bottom of the bottle. Its not the greatest pic, like I said i believe it is a 3 on the left an 8 on the right and a 1 below the symbol.
cows I looked around but could not find a similar ROOT bottle nor another one like it marked with Owens-Illinois. I'm not even sure if the bottle and the patent are one and the same. It might be a tough one to find if there is no patent number embossed on it. Searching the "Covert Bottling Company" is probably the best avenue to pursue. ~ * ~ Hey, J What happened to the base picture?
I haven't been able to find any specific information on the Covert Bottling Company yet, but I did find this MOO acl by them. The description said it was dated 1950. I came across a listing that said these MOO bottles are hard to find and that in 2002 one sold on eBay for $255.00
Based on my recent findings, it appears there is a direct connection between the Covert Bottling Company and the ... Covert Baking Company ~ Middleport, Ohio This may explain why there are no listings for the bottling company. Check it out ...

Similar bottle but ... 1. Covert Baking Company2. Covert Bottling Company They must have had their reasons for using two different names, but what those reasons were eludes me.
Thanks spbob for all the Info. I was in middleport yesterday and found a bottle just like my pictured one. They were asking $10.Also saw an unopened milkay like the ones in the link you just shared.
J You're welcome. I enjoy doing research almost as much as I do collecting soda bottles. I found this advertisement, whose headline pretty much sums up my feelings towards the Covert Bottling/Baking Company history, and one I thought you might find interesting as well. It would be interesting to know why a baking company would also be involved with soda and beer bottling. It could be they were only distributors at first and then set up a bottling facility later, which might explain the name change. Besides this ad, I also found a listing that said they were granted a license to distribute beer in 1933, which might have been the same time when they got into be beverage business.
